APL Celebrates Turning 100

with a

Centennial Reception

Emcee Susette Bollard welcomes the guests (over 130 of them) to the Centennial Reception.

The Centennial Reception for the the Ainsworth Public Library was held on Saturday, December 17th  at the Williamstown Middle High School.  Willem Lange was the Key Note Speaker with Susette Bollard, Superintendent Orange North Supervisory Union, acting as Master of Ceremonies.  Musical entertainment was provided by Adam Boyce and Ben Koenig.

State Librarian Martha Reid gave out the awards to the winners of the elementary school bookmark contest “What Reading Means to Me…” with APL Librarian Flora O’Hara and PTA co-chair Kathleen Ducharme.  The students of Kim Deslaurier’s eighth grade class read poetry about Williamstown of their own composition.  Also on display were models of notable Williamstown buildings.  Students from the ninth grade history classes of Carl Williams displayed family genealogy projects and a time-line of Williamstown from 1911 to 2011.  State Senator Mark MacDonald presented long-time members of the APL’s Board of Trustees Florence Winters and Ann Hegarty with a Governor’s Proclamation naming December 17, 2011, as Ainsworth Public Library Centennial Day.

The Vermont Authors Silent Auction of 24 books by 21 autographed books donated by Vermont authors and the Vermont Gift Raffle Basket filled with over $700 worth of goods and services donated by Vermont businesses and crafters received a great deal of attention with bidding wars and bundles of raffle tickets sold.  The program culminated with the announcement of the winners of the Raffle and the Silent Auction.

 Patrons at the APL have been busy reading this summer!

1,250 books, movies, audiobooks, and CDs were checked out by APL patrons

between June 18th and August 30th.

Fantasy Fiction at the APL

Thanks to a patron’s generous donation, the Ainsworth Public Library now has a Fantasy Fiction section.  Many of the titles are classic fantasy fiction including the Heritage of Shannara series by Terry Brooks,  the Green Angel Tower series by Tad Williams, and the Last of the Renshai series by Mary Zucker Reichert.  New additions to the Fantasy section include titles from the popular series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin, the Kingkiller Chronicles by Philip Rothfuss, and the Wicked Years by Gregory Maguire

 The Traveling Storyteller & Co. played to a packed house on Saturday, June 25th.

The show included singing, dancing, and a puppet show of Country Mouse, City Mouse

to the delight of all.

Summer Reading Fun

Summer Reading Program Grand Finale Party  was a grand success

filled with games, snacks and activities.  Children and adults alike

participated in the fun.   Certificates were awarded to the proud Summer Readers.

Public Service Opportunity

Help your library AND have fun!

The library publicly recognized its many volunteers at a

special appreciation party on Saturday, May 1^st.

The volunteers help in a variety of ways that are big or small,

long-term or short-term.

The library has volunteers who have helped with one-time project

and those who have volunteered for forty years.

Attendees were introduced, thanked and given a

special volunteer appreciation pin.

Williamstown resident, Henry Dufresne, and librarian, Flora O’Hara, are shown with some of the 399 children’s books collected in a recent book drive at Ainsworth Public Library for the Once Upon a Story community event, co-sponsored by Brittany, Henry’s great granddaughter. This program challenges young girls to collect donations of children’s books to be given to area children facing health challenges or unexpected crisis. We are so proud of our community for its generosity and compassion!
